elements of a fine wine

Well, Thanksgiving is upon us! Whether you are mindfully entering this moment, or you have already set up all of your Christmas décor, we cannot lose sight of a beautiful reality. This reality can be discovered in a bottle of good wine.

Over time and through the process the wine can experience stress, transformation, and infusion of flavors. A good red wine will age over time as it sits in a cellar. Slowly the wine will consume the oxygen that seeps through the cork and a series of reactions happen, releasing a fuller aromatic flavor. In essence over time, it keeps getting better.

In Psalm 145:4-7 David writes, “Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. Your awe-inspiring deeds will be on every tongue; I will proclaim your greatness; they will sing with joy about our righteousness.” David goes on to brag about how wonderful God’s Kingdom is and all the great acts God has done.

Notice, every generation is commanded to tell of the Goodness of God. Which means from generation to generation, over time, God never changes, and in fact, God keeps getting better. When we look back over time, as individuals, families, and as a church we can see how God continues to do great things in our midst. The relationship we have with him just keeps getting better. Hardships, periods of waiting, transformation, and celebrations only heighten the fullness of our relationship. God keeps getting better! Moments of just Abiding heightens the infusion process as the Spirit shapes us and we take on the characteristics of Jesus.

So, before you cut the turkey or turn on the parade or football game take time to acknowledge and appreciate how God has been present and Awesome in your life. Dwell or Abide in Him over this weekend and rejoice how He has gotten better. Don’t just savor all the food in this time of Thanks but Savor the Goodness and Beauty of our God.
