An Advent lesson

This was the first year we actually utilized an advent calendar with our family. Years ago we bought one with fun little doors and a Nordic scene on top, even with a light! We have attempted, like most ideas and people, but quickly forgot and it became another “thing” to do. Last year, well, the house sat quietly on the shelf giving a great theatrical performance as if we actually did it. This year, though oh boy, let me tell you….

This year, we bought a Lego set and for each door we put a couple blocks. The challenge each day was to use the given blocks to create something, without the instructions. Dispersed between the building days we had readings and scripture for the family to read. At some point there was a declaration of knowing it was a set, but they would just keep building together, with what they had. It was that moment that sparked a conversation about how to keep going with something that you just don’t know the full picture. Sparked by this no instructions conversation we began talking about advent and what we actually learn from it or how it shapes our reality.

I realized that we, like the children putting together a set, day by day was just like us living the life of advent. While we don’t know exactly what this all turns out to be or how it works out, we know enough to keep going. We know confidently the promises and faithfulness of God. Each week of advent we focus on the four different themes: Hope, Peace, Love, and Joy. These are ideas or realities that keep us moving forward. Concepts that we can stand upon and build our lives shaped by the reality of Hope, Peace, Love, and Joy. The prophetic words were soaked with these realities and gave Israel a steady foundation to stand upon as they strained forward awaiting their Messiah. It can be said of the same for the early church as they experienced persecution and wavering. these concepts were the foundation to stand as they, too, strained forward for the coming of Christ.

We are advent people. Straining, waiting with anticipation for our King’s return and the fullness of his Kingdom. But we cannot deny and forget about the broken circumstances around us. Life is still not completely redeemed and what best stirs the depth of our hearts, giving acceptance and a solid foundation but the HOPE, PEACE, LOVE, AND JOY - that comes with being with Christ. So, as we are on the brink of concluding another advent season and as we move into the glorious Christmas season, may we maintain these rhythms of advent. May we move forward standing on the realities that advent has taught us and live in the confidence that Hope, Peace, Love, and Joy brings! Merry Christmas!
